FEATURE: The Heart Of A Worshipper

August 2nd, 2012 / Stephane

When you say the word ‘worship’ the most common thing that comes to mind is a group of people singing songs together, led by a super talented musician or extremely big choir. Worship is an expression of love that takes many forms and can be shown in a number of ways which are different from individual to individual. Some may sing and dance while others may chose to reflect quietly and think about various things. But the most important area of worship has to be the heart, what motivates you to do these acts of worship even when you may not feel like it. Once the heart of worship has been established everything else falls into place.

WORSHIP AS AN ACT

Acts of worship can be anything from singing, dancing and drawing to spending time with someone. I say spending time with someone because acts of worship are a way of communicating the emotion you feel towards something. For example, a love song tells someone and others about your feelings for that special person. One of the definitions of the word ‘worship‘, literally means ‘temple sweeper‘. This tells us that to worship, also involves an aspect of serving or giving.

WORSHIP AS A LIFESTYLE

If you love me then prove it.’ Worship as a lifestyle goes one step further than an act of worship and this phrase pretty much sums it up. Imagine you wanted to be a swimmer and you told everyone that was your plan for life, but the problem was you were scared of water and had a poor diet. In order to prove you want to be a swimmer and before you could actually swim you would first have to overcome your fear of water and after that, dedicate your life to training. In the same way the heart of a worshipper has to be established before you can go on to truly express your emotions.

Words last for a moment whilst lifestyle dictates the future.

WORSHIP AS A CHOICE

When you strip away everything from worship and get to the core the thing you will often find most, it is a choice. Once you have overcome the fear of the water you then have to deal with the ‘poor diet’ so to speak. Your heart maybe in the right place but it then becomes a thing of actions speaking louder than words. A poor diet would not be helpful in your aim to becoming a professional swimmer. You have to choose to change your diet and give the training you need a chance, or leave it and struggle more than you need to. Choose to worship.

LOVE

When love is your motivation all obstacles that stop you from getting somewhere become smaller. When you are passionate about something you stop at nothing to achieve it. The heart of a worshiper is rooted in the relationship the person has with what they worship. Christian worship is ‘the human response to a divine relationship’ and worship goes as far as we take it. Do we love enough to just say it or do we love enough to take it further and prove it. Actions speak louder than words.
