FEATURE: 5 Reasons We Love Michelle Obama

August 1st, 2012 / Stephane

Michelle Obama is the First Lady of the United States and  has fast become an icon in her own right, as well as being recognised as one half of a seriously hot power couple. Here are 5 reasons why we love her:

1. She certainly knows a thing or two about success and hard work.  Speaking about her education, she reflected: ‘I never cut class. I loved getting A’s, I liked being smart. I liked being on time. I thought being smart is cooler than anything in the world.’ Indeed, having graduated from both Princeton University and Harvard Law School, Michelle is also only the third First Lady to hold a postgraduate degree – an impressive credential given that Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States.

2. Michelle’s support for Barack Obama during his campaign for presidency is inspirational. She spent a number of years carving out a career in several high-profile, executive positions; for many years she was the more outwardly successful partner in the Obama duo, earning almost twice as much as Barack Obama. Nonetheless, as Barack’s presidential campaign gathered speed, she reduced her own working commitments significantly in order to help him campaign. She shows that not only behind every successful man, there’s an awesome woman – it also seems clear that being a ‘helpmate’ to your spouse is not something to be despised and does not negate a woman’s importance in the partnership. If anything, having helped Barack become the man he is now, she simultaneously upgraded herself to First Lady position.

3. Having been listed among ‘10 of the World’s Best Dressed People’ by Vanity Fair and People magazine, Michelle is arguably one of the most stylish First Ladies to ever strut into the White House. Her fashion choices continue to silence even her harshest critics and make her contemporaries look bland, at best.

4. Michelle Obama continues to flex her philanthropic muscles in a number of directions, one being in the effort to curb childhood obesity. Her campaign titled ‘Let’s Move!’ enlisted the help of none other than superstar Beyonce, who created a music video called ‘Move Your Body’ that encourages young people to be more active. If that wasn’t enough, Mrs Obama proved that she knows how to shake a leg when was caught doing the ‘Dougie’ while promoting this campaign.

5. Mrs Obama has undeniably fabulous arms. It became apparent that they are arms that she has worked hard to maintain, after her recent visit to the Ellen DeGeneres show. Michelle did not hesitate in dropping to the floor and challenging the talk show host to a round of push-ups.  Michelle won the challenge with ease and when the audience told her how many she had completed, she casually let them know that she wasn’t done, ‘I just stopped.’ Love her!

It is clear, then, that Michelle is not just an attractive woman – she is also intelligent and hardworking. Moreover, she does not propagate an often two-dimensional image of the ‘independent woman;’ rather, she shows that a strong successful woman is also one that recognises both her role within the family unit and her responsibilities towards the wider community. So regardless of whether you agree with her politics or not, there is certainly a lot to love Mrs Obama for.
