FEATURE: Choosing the Perfect Wedding Planner

March 23rd, 2014 / Stephane

Everyone seems to have a wedding planner for their big day, but how do you know what to look for in a wedding planner?  When you interview prospective wedding planners here are five key topics to discuss with them.

5. Experience.

A wedding planner with a lot of experience is what everyone wants; however, someone with a lot of experience may have outdated or old-fashioned ideas.  However, you also do not want a wedding planner that has no experience and just received a certification.  Lastly, choose a wedding planner that has experience planning the type of wedding you want.  For example, if you are planning a Jewish or Mexican-American wedding then choose a wedding planner who has experience in that area.

4. Time.

You want a wedding planner that will spend enough time with you so that you feel comfortable with the vision of your wedding.  Remember to ask your wedding planner if you can have unlimited e-mail correspondence and/ or text messages with him/her.  Some wedding planners will only allow you a limited number of times to call or e-mail them.  I find this to be a huge disservice because the wedding planner is limiting the communication you can have with them.  Communication with your wedding planner is so important in order to make sure your day is planned as you want.

3. Small details.

It is important to pick a wedding planner that will take care of all the small details on your wedding day.  For example, make sure your wedding planner will take care of storing the top layer of your wedding cake, store or transfer your wedding gifts, ensure that all vendors arrive on time, ensure final payments to vendors and have a plan to handle any unruly guests.  The list of small details goes on and on so it is important that your wedding planner will take care of these details or delegate these tasks to someone else so you do not have to worry about them.

2. Contract.

Wedding Planner

When interviewing potential wedding planners make sure to carefully read over the contract.  The contract may have hidden fees or clauses that you were not aware of and may not want.  Also, make sure that contract includes a clause in there discussing what is to happen in the event your wedding planner has an emergency and cannot be at your wedding.

1. Personality.

Wedding

Most importantly choose someone that fits your personality.  If you have a Type A personality then do not choose a wedding planner who is laid back and nonchalant.  Or if you are a really creative person that thinks outside the box then a wedding planner that has outside the norm ideas will work best for you.  Your wedding planner should work well with you and be a great asset to your wedding planning process.

On the most important day of your life you want a wedding planner that will take care of all the small details and make your wedding day stress free.
