FEATURE: The Mercy Behind The Ministry

June 21st, 2012 / Stephane

Since 1986, Mercy Ministries has been transforming the lives of broken women around the world by supporting them to overcome life controlling issues and introducing them to Jesus Christ.

1 in 4 women will need treatment for depression at some point and 1 in 20 will experience an eating disorder.

Mercy Ministries have identified a problem and are doing something to put it right. With NHS waiting lists getting longer and longer, and many women being unable to access the care that they need, Mercy Ministries have taken matters into their own hands. They are reaching out to the broken, caring for the forgotten and loving the abused. To be exact, Mercy Ministries are saving lives.

So what makes Mercy Ministries unique? Founded by Nancy Alcorn in the USA, Mercy Ministries run four homes in the USA, one in Canada and one in the UK. Young women from all over the UK are offered a six-month residential programme which combines Christian discipleship, prayer and worship with one-to-one support, and mentoring, helping each individual to identify and address the root to their issues and to walk the journey of forgiveness and restoration. And it doesn’t stop there. Mercy Ministries understand that healing isn’t only about looking at the past; it’s also about looking forward to the future and what lies ahead. In supporting these women to take their futures and dreams into their own hands, Mercy Ministries delivers practical life skills training on a range of topics from healthy eating and relationship boundaries to CV writing and financial budgeting, equipping and empowering women to take ownership of their lives and realise their potential.

For up to 6 months, each young woman receives unlimited support and care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Add to this the fact that each woman’s stay is completely free of charge and you truly see the heart of the ministry for what it is – selfless, passionate, determined and Christ-filled. Mercy Ministries works alongside the local church to ‘bind up the broken hearted and see the captives free’, and for the past 6 years, this is exactly what has been happening in a beautiful Victorian home in Yorkshire. Mercy Ministries UK Executive Director Arianna Walker describes the work of the organisation as ‘serving the body of Christ’ by providing ‘intensive care’ to young women who need their love, care and support. This is holistic care at its best. This organisation perfectly models the body of Christ at work. Judgement is nowhere to be seen, care knows no end and a gap has been filled.  Mercy Ministries makes me proud to be a Christian. This is an organisation that does what is says on the tin. It is unapologetic, passionate and determined.

If I were to need their care, I wouldn’t think twice about trusting Mercy Ministries with my recovery. Incalculable lives have been saved through them and countless women continue to find breakthrough, restoration and transformation.

As a young Christian woman, thank you Mercy Ministries for everything that you are doing to support, love and care for the vulnerable and broken women of the UK. Thank you that were I to need you, you would be there with open arms.
