REVIEW: Curly By Nature Hair

July 28th, 2014 / Stephane

I don’t think hair products that claim to be good on naturally curly hair work all that well. There I said it! I am often highly dubious of any product that purports that it will change my life—often because I will try it and it will leave my hair looking as though I’ve been dragged through a bush backwards and feeling either as dry as the Sahara desert or more greasy than a bag of chicken and chips.

Nonetheless, I recently came across a new range of products by a company called Curly By Nature, owned by Klerrisa McDonald—an experienced stylist and hairdresser. Speaking of her products, Klerrisa states that her ‘personal mission is to promote healthy haircare practices using natural products and methods, dispel the myths and eliminate the misconception that hair in its originally curly form is unmanageable.’

So I decided to open my heart and give the products a try. What I loved most about the way that the Curly By Nature products were presented is that you are given a method by which you use them. I don’t have a set hair routine that I follow religiously and I am forever on Youtube trying to master ten-minute-long tutorials about how to look after my hair, but the products here come with a simple four-step chart  that I found accessible (using pictures always helps) and easy to follow.

What I found somewhat revolutionary was the encouragement to not even use a comb as you prepare, but simply use water and the Hair Repair Oil.

I liked the oil, which consisted of a mixture of oils, including Macadamia Nut Oil, Coconut Oil and Passionflower Oil.  The smell was light and quite pleasant, which I appreciated—as had it been pungent or overpowering in any way, I would have remorselessly abandoned it immediately. For if on any given day my hair does not look good, it must at the very least SMELL good.

I followed up the (patience-building) detangling process with the Moisture Shampoo and Intensive Conditioner. Whilst the latter two products did not necessarily offer anything different or better to the products I had been using previously, they did at least leave my hair feeling fresh and well-nourished.

Intensive Conditioning Mask £22.99

I have since implemented the step-by-step process into my normal hair care routine, which has helped hugely (and my comb rarely gets a look in). Of all the products, I would most readily recommend the Hair Repair Oil, which is packed with all the great oils ‘genetically curly hair’ (as Klerrisa refers to it) needs. So whilst I am still looking for the product that makes my hair sing, I am happily adopting at least one of the Curly By Nature products into my trusty little collection.
