NOV-NATURAL HAIR MONTH: Milk & Honey MEETS LULU

November 7th, 2014 / Stephane

So we caught up with Lulu, the brains, founder and visionary behind the all natural, I Love Lulu Hair Spa!

Here’s what she had to say about her amazing venture! It’s evident her dedication to healthy well treated hair is well mapped from the moment you step foot in to her salon. Everything from the interior design, products used to their stylists: educating women on how to maintain and look after their hair is her pride and heart. Whilst creating natural and organic products to look after your tresses, I Love Lulu is a much needed service to the natural hair community as we all figure out how to tend to our fro!

1. How did you come up with the name for your salon?

Several of my family members have tried to take credit for coming up with the name, to the extent that it’s now become somewhat of a family joke. But the truth is, before I opened my business, I was an in-demand stylist for several years, working on various TV, film and print projects, plus regularly servicing private and celebrity clients, all in the Los Angeles area. My clients would regularly tell me that they loved me and my work, so when I decided some years later to open a “hair spa,” as I call it, my goal was to basically duplicate myself. I wanted to train other stylists in my personal techniques, developed over the course of 20 years in the industry, so that the “love” and demand for high-quality haircare would continue and expand. Hence, the name, I Love Lulu. It’s not so much about clients loving me as an individual, as it is about their loving my technique and ideology — the “Lulu way” of doing hair, so to speak.

2. What are the services you offer at I Love Lulu Hair Spa that are unique?

What’s truly unique about our hair spa are the exclusive, homemade, all-natural treatments, boosts, scalp massages and products we offer. All of our recipes are made by hand, using raw, natural, organic and holistic materials, and our products are also bottled by hand.

3. How important is it to have salons that are informed/ educated about natural afro hair?

It’s incredibly important, and it’s also a codependent relationship: People with kinky/curly/Africa-derived hair-types need people with my skills to be fully knowledgeable about their hair, and at the same time, people like me who’ve studied ethnic natural haircare need to be able to work with clients who are courageous, proud of what God has given them, and willing to wear their hair naturally and chemical-free — even when it doesn’t seem convenient to do so. Ethnic hair requires focus and specialization. And what I’ve found is that you really shouldn’t offer too many different options or methods when you specialize in it, or you run the risk of distracting your clients from their resolve to be all-natural and chemical-free, as well as distracting yourself from fully understanding and mastering the care of our endlessly-varied hair-types.

What’s your personal favourite treatment?

My favourite treatment would be Spoiled, I guess. It’s made up of organic oil and more than seven organic herbs. No matter what your hair type, condition, or style, or even your ethnicity, Spoiled will benefit you. It’s our “universal” treatment, you might say.

What is the ethos and heart of your brand?

The heart of our brand is the idea that natural and organic haircare is not merely a trend, but a superior, preferable way of wearing and caring for one’s hair. Being dedicated to using only all-natural products is also a superior way of caring for your hair . . . your hair, scalp and body deserve better than the use of products laden with chemicals and unnatural preservatives. Feed hair, Steam hair, Grow hair — that’s our company mantra, and it’s what we happily do for clients, with great success, five days per week.
