FEATURE: Jesus, Be My Valentine

January 31st, 2013 / Stephane

Valentine’s Day is one of my least favourite days of the year. It serves as a sickening reminder of the constant pressure that can threaten even the happiest of couplings and forces the single among us into temporary hibernation. That said it gives us a snapshot of our relationships.

It highlights how much we know about each other, how affectionate we are with each other and how much effort we pour into making sure our relationship stays fresh and exciting. It reminds us that we can say I love in a thousand ways (some cheesier than others) and that those who really mean the most to us deserve to know exactly how much they mean to us.

Although the connection is nearly always made to romantic attachments I believe Jesus can and should be our first love. His life serves as a stellar reminder of the power that love can hold and how captivating it can be when put into action. Jesus tells us how to love, who to love, why we love and shows us how loved we are. His blueprint tells us what love should be. And why is this so enthralling?

love

This excites me, it exhilarates me because his love is a love of promise, a perfect and complete love. It never lets us down, forgets our birthday and his love never runs out. His generosity and outpouring of love overwhelms and consumes. His validation is enough to complete and he heals.

Who Jesus was and what he did in giving us a second chance is pursuit the likes of which a Hollywood rom-com is yet to convey. Many of us are only too familiar with the let downs of the modern man but those who know Jesus understand the intensity with which he loves us, pursues us and wants a relationship with us. That is the essence of romance.

love

So yes I’m being cheesy, I’m saying Jesus be my valentine not because I have no other valentine but because I’ve discovered what he’s done for me, I’ve fallen in love with that. I’m inspired by the freedom he’s given me and I’m in awe of the grace and mercy he’s afforded me. Jesus has my focus. It’s that relationship that I want to build into and invest in. It’s his affections I seek and him that I want to know that I love him this Valentine’s Day. I urge you, single or otherwise give him a shot- you won’t regret it.
