“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”~Abraham Lincoln
We all have role models, people we look up to and admire for their posture, poise and accomplishments. Since we only see the final product, we neglect to think they might have endured trials with tenacity to triumph. How do we become who we’ve always dreamed we would be in our careers, marriage, and families? The key is in preparation. Here are five ways to prepare yourself for the future person, wife, and business woman you’ve always desired to be.
1. Maintaining a prayer life and quiet time with God.
First thing’s first, unless you’re plugged into the source of life, you will not have the power to do what you were destined to do. Seek in everything you do to reflect the image of God to other people, in school, the workplace, wherever you go. Reading the Bible (our instruction manual) gives us guidance and an active prayer life helps us to be attentive to the Holy Spirit desires. It transforms us and renews our minds into the likeness of Jesus so we can flourish in our calling.
2. Developing Monetary Discipline.
In relationships and business financial maintenance is imperative for relational and personal advancement. One of the top reasons for divorce and relational stress is financial disagreement or stress. I am currently reading Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. This New York Times Best-Selling Christian financial advisor has written several books, hosts a radio show and his financial strategies have helped thousands get debt-free. Dave also incorporates biblical principles into his financial plans, it’s a thrilling, challenging and life-changing read.
3. Cooking/ Doing Chores
Women are now seen as co-contributors to the household as opposed to docile creatures meant only to cook and clean. However that doesn’t exempt us from knowing simple life skills! Not only does cooking at home save money (num. 2) it’s healthier and sharing chores helps to spread the duties so one person does not get overwhelmed.
2. Doing you first!
Your aspirations are important because your capabilities compliment those of the other individual your destiny is tied to. Developing a healthy self-perspective, in conjunction with seeking godly purpose enhances your potential and ability to contribute to the lives of others. If you neglect to develop your gift, how can you be what you are meant to be together with your partner?
1. Developing Communication Skills
The most important thing in a relationship is communication. The lack thereof is the number one reason relationships fail. Practice this skill with your friends and co-workers; the more communicatively clear you are, the more your viewpoint can be known and understood- whether they agree with you or not- is another thing, but at least there is no room for doubt concerning your thoughts and perspective.
Sharpening these skills can take you to places you never dreamed of relationally!
