Feature: 10 Things To Do Before You Die

July 5th, 2012 / Stephane

I know what you’re thinking – you’ve heard this all too familiar title many times before, often wishing you had the money, time and an element of reality was present. So I’ve come up with a more realistic approach to the traditional ’10 Things to do Before you Die.’ The aim is to make it as achievable for you to do as possible!

1. LEARN ANOTHER LANGUAGE – FLUENTLY!

You may grumble and think I did that in secondary school but before you dismiss this, think about it. Learning another language of your choice has never been easier particularly with the introduction of youtube classes and computer programmes! Remember it doesn’t have to be the classic French, Spanish or German – why not try something obscure like Cornish, or, if you’re like me and have an African heritage improve your knowledge on your native language.

2. SOLVE A RUBIK’S CUBE

Believe it or not; it’s not actually as difficult as it looks to master this ‘80s creation. No matter how scrambled it looks, you are never more than twenty moves away from solving it! There are many ways for you to learn a technique that suits you, from YouTube, to online articles and advice from those who know. Once you’ve mastered this, you can start to build on speed  It’s a great party trick so why not?

3. RUN A LONG DISTANCE EVENT

I say long distance because although it is popular for many people to say they want to run a marathon at some point in their lives – in most cases they don’t reach that level! This includes any distance from 1 kilometre to the full 25 miles! It’s always good to run for a charity you support, the feeling of accomplishment at the end is incredible. Not to mention the preparation for such an event will definitely have a positive effect on your body, particularly the discipline. An increased fitness level will also help you to live longer

4. TRY AN AQUATIC SPORT

If you live in the UK, this should be easy, as there are plenty of coastal areas for you to try this out! Aquatic sports don’t have to be viewed as an exclusive holiday activity. Look for a local marine activity centre with some mates, hire a wetsuit and get out in the sea! From windsurfing, to jet skiing to even simple canoeing. And make sure you capsize your canoe, serious! You won’t forget the feeling of plunging into that ice cold water.

5. FLY A LONG DISTANCE FLIGHT IN FIRST CLASS

Ever walked past the seats in first class and business class and felt jealous of passengers that’ll have maximum leg room? Be jealous no more. Treat yourself to a first class ticket if you haven’t before. You’ll probably spend the rest of the flight like I did, stretching down to touch your toes in amazement and wonder! However once you’ve tried this, you’ll probably never want to go back to economy…

6. GO TO A LIVE EVENT

‘Live event’ encompasses many areas – we could be talking about music, sport, or even a television programme. Words can’t really describe the atmosphere; it’s one of those ‘you had to be there!’ moments. Let’s face it, watching your favourite music artist or football team on the TV just wouldn’t have the same effect.

7. VOLUNTEER FOR PEOPLE IN A LESS FORTUNATE POSITION THAN YOU

This is really the best way for you to give back to society. It doesn’t have to be some mission to Ethiopia on a Comic Relief budget; it can be in your local area. Contact your council and see what you can do to make a difference – the feeling you get afterwards is priceless.

8. BUY A ONE WAY TICKET TO A RANDOM DESTINATION

Ever wanted that feeling of ‘I-don’t-know-what’s-gonna-happen-next’? Break out of the regular rat race and take a trip. Anyplace, anywhere (within budget of course) if you’re feeling lucky, you could take a map of say England, Europe (or even the world,) blindfold your eyes and point anywhere on the map. Backpacking is a cheap way of getting around, building valuable experiences and meeting new people. Ready, Set, Go!

9. MEET A PUBLIC FIGURE

Obviously this is easier said than done and no Madame Tussauds doesn’t count! However being starstruck is an experience we all should have – I’m still waiting to be struck with awe! Plus you can take the obligatory ‘I look ridiculous but I don’t care ‘cos I’m with a celeb’ photo.

10. LEARN AN INSTRUMENT

The best thing about learning an instrument is that you can try out as many as you like until you find the one that suits you best! Playing an instrument is a skill that is highly valued, and it aids with improving co-ordination. You’re not expected to play on a huge stage setting; even playing a guitar in your room will provide you with a sense of achievement.

So why not try out these options and perhaps turn your favourite into a hobby? (But don’t go around stalking celebrities!) You never know, doing an activity once could unravel a talent you never knew you had
