1. Human trafficking is the second largest global organized crime today, generating approximately 31.6 billion USD each year. Specifically, trafficking for sexual exploitation generates 27.8 billion USD per year
2. Tragically, only 1-2 percent of victims are rescued, and only 1 in 100,000 Europeans involved in trafficking are convicted
3. In Eastern Europe an estimated 80 percent of rescued women end up re-trafficked. Most of this re-trafficking occurs within the first two years of their escape. Since the year 2000, over 7,000 victims of trafficking have been repatriated back to the Ukraine. The need for transition and reintegration assistance for these victims has been recognized by the Ukrainian government. However so far efforts to supply this assistance have been limited by a lack of funding.
4. In the UK, trafficking for sexual exploitation has a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment.
5. In the UK there were 114 prosecutions for human trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation in 2008-9 and 102 in 2009-10. There were 31 convictions for trafficking for sexual exploitation in 2008 and 18 convictions in 2009. There were 10 prosecutions for labour exploitation in 2008-09 and 19 in 2009-10.There were 4 convictions for trafficking for labour exploitation in 2008 and 2 convictions in 2009.
