My mission field is unconventional in every way: it lies in dressing rooms and trailers, in studios, on the stage and on film. Like a spider builds its life with the silk inside of it: so I build my life around the desire God has placed in me to be a performer. Is it possible to remain separate and holy in the entertainment business? The only way is to have guidelines and principles you must adhere to with choosing projects.
In this digital world everything has the potential to be viewed beyond one’s lifetime: I believe a performer should choose projects with that posterity in mind. Our lives and actions have the capability to make an impact for many generations to come. Therefore as an actress, especially a Christian actress, I seek to choose projects where a positive and Godly legacy will be left behind.
Three questions I ask myself before accepting an offer are:
1) What is my mission and how does this project bring me closer to achieving that goal and fulfilling my purpose?
2 Does this role give me the opportunity to share the beauty of living by Godly principles?
3) Is the role edifying to my mind, body, spirit but most of all the Body of Christ?
God chose me, consecrated me and appointed me for a specific purpose, so I must walk therein. Best- selling author Neil Gaiman, admonished the University of the Arts graduating class of 2012 to treat their goals as a mountain. He assured them, as long as they continued walking toward the mountain, they would find success. He said, good opportunities may come your way, but unless they lead to the mountain you should turn away from them. Likewise, great opportunities may present themselves to me, but unless they lead to the fulfillment of my purpose in God: I will never experience joy.
We all have witnessed this in the lives of numerous celebrities imprisoned by destructive and addictive behaviors that took their lives all while seeking to fill a void only God could fill. Worldly success means nothing if you are not in your destiny. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 “seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you”. All my needs will be provided for because I seek God and his glory in my life and career, but most importantly, I will remain within His will. God has blessed me with a gift to make His name famous and not my own. I am a fisherman of men. Showing people the love of God and redemptive power of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit is the most important thing I could ever do.
Actress Candace Cameron, famously known as D.J. Tanner on Full House, echoes the same sentiments in these short interview clips. She is a Christian in the business and has done very well for herself. I hope if you pursue a career in the entertainment business that you seek God and a chance to magnify His name every chance that you get! Keep walking towards the mountain. God Bless!
