NATURAL AFRO HAIR: WE LOVE Kurly Klips

January 11th, 2015 / Stephane

Kurly Klips is a haircare brand that produces 100% human hair clip-in extensions for women who are looking to add volume and length to their natural (non-chemically straightened) locks.

Being a woman with natural hair, I find that winter is the season that I prefer to wrap up my hair and opt for ‘protective styling’. I’ve never been a huge fan of wearing weaves, particularly since I suffered from traction alopecia after a disastrous trip to a hair salon. Furthermore, weaves make my head itch to the point of unhappiness and verging on despair. Beyonce may be a fan of tapping weaves, but for me, wearing weaves often had me ungracefully grabbing for any sharp implement that would ease the ferocious discomfort.

Therefore, for me, protective styling often translates to donning a wig or two over the chilly months to allow my hair to hibernate and chill out until spring presents itself. The freedom of being able to let my scalp breathe once the day is done is something I choose not to compromise anymore. This is one of the reasons I was eager to try Kurly Klips! Simply clip them on in the morning and once you’re done for the day, you can easily, quickly and safely take them out again.

I have been using two sets of the Mermaid Spirals Collection which give my hair the volume and length I could only dream of. Upon receiving the Kurly Klips packages, I marvelled at the bold, playful fuchsia packaging that pushed my hoarding tendencies to the limit: they just look too good to throw away.

Now, I must confess I’m not naturally gifted when it comes to hairstyling. Which is why I appreciated finding the Kurly Klips Youtube channel that covers everything from how to put them in, to how to dye them and style them. Lana,  Kurly Klips Founder & Creator, stars in all the videos and comes across as hugely personable and down-to-earth. It left me with the lasting impression and appreciation that this brand was not only created for a girl like me, but it was created by a girl like me too.

I love the versatility of the clip-ins; although I have mainly opted for a simple side part style, I am looking forward to experimenting (with huge amounts of help from Youtube) with the ponytail and bun looks too.

However, as I noted before, due to my lack of innate ability to dazzle the world with my skill in the hairstyling department—I have found that blending my own hair with the Mermaid Spirals has been a challenge. That said, I think that had I opted for the Shoulder Chic Fro, I would not have had as much trouble, as it is closer to my natural hair texture (4c). It has probably taken three weeks of intermittent trying and failing to get to a place where I can confidently wear the hair without a hat to cover my blending sins. But do note that my attempts have bordered on lazy and I could well have mastered it sooner had I applied myself a little more. The other potential obstacle one might face is at $199 for a set, Kurly Klips may set you back a little bit, but it’s very much much worth the investment.

Not only do you cut out salon costs of sewing in and taking out weaves, this method allows you to really master how to style and look after your own natural hair. Truly an all round investment that can last for months and possibly years depending on how you look after them.

In short, I love Kurly Klips. I love that I can take them out at the end of the day, without harming my own hair, that they can (eventually, if you’re anything like me) be manipulated to blend in with my own hair and the hair is a texture that fits more closely to my own than some of the long, straight, flowing locks I have donned in the past.
