What defines beauty? Long thick hair? That killer smile? Some say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think it’s fair to say that beauty comes from within. On a physical level, it’s also important to take care of yourself internally as well as externally. Here are some handy tips for you to remain bea-utiful!
5. Sleep
The benefits of a good nights sleep are far more than losing dark rings round your eyes! The recommended hours of sleep are 8.5-10 hours for teenagers and 7.5-9 hours for those aged 18 and above in order for the human body to function at its best. This is because sleep is really a series of cycles and stages that are designed to restore and invigorate mind and body. Side effects of sleep deprivation don’t only include tiredness but can be a pathway for diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. A key thing to remember is that in order to fully work at your potential, sleep is a necessity, not a luxury.
4. 5-a-day
I’m sure you’ve heard this time and time again, so this probably isn’t new information! Remember though, that it is five portions of fruit a day, so you wouldn’t have to eat an entire pineapple for instance. Just think of a portion as the equivalent of a handful of that particular fruit. Don’t forget to take moderation into account – eating fast food three times a day will not be redeemed by a rushed fruit binge! This isn’t to say that food and veg should take over your diet entirely; healthy carbohydrates found in bread, cereals, potatoes and yams are just as important. Sufficient milk and dairy intake is also necessary as well as meat, fish and if you’re vegetarian, protein-rich food such as beans and pulses.
3. Regular Exercise
The recommended amount of exercise is thirty minutes a day. Unfortunately there is a common misconception that a regular gym routine is the only way of achieving this. Many people may not have the time or money to spare to have a membership, but an easy way to exercise is to integrate it into your daily routine – for example walking/cycling to school, college, uni or work, or taking up a hobby that will increase fitness levels, and there are a wide range too – from zumba to rock climbing!
2. Gifts and Talents
Everyone’s different, therefore everyone has unique talents. This is a way of boosting your self esteem. You may well discover a hidden talent if you take up a new sport as a hobby! Or if you’re not the sporty type, try something new that you haven’t done before that you might enjoy like taking up a new instrument. This could lead you closer to your calling in life, leaving you satisfied and confident – this will make a huge difference to your happiness and the way you carry yourself.
1. Dress Smart
Marilyn Monroe said “Your clothes should be tight enough to show you’re a woman, but loose enough to show you’re a lady.” Take pride in the fact that there’s nobody who looks like you (unless of course, you’re an identical twin.) Wear clothes that bring out your best features and are a true representation of what you stand for. You’ll be staying beautiful in no time!
